@jessicaabrams: What advice do you have for other women in the industry?
I would tell other women in the industry not to give into any prevailing trend — whether it be in topic, tone, or format — and to tell the stories they want to tell in the way they want to tell them. I would also say, learn the craft. It’s tempting (and relatively easy) to jump right in and shoot something, but I think there’s a lot to be said for doing your homework and studying what’s out there and/or who you admire and then finding your own voice. It takes time to do that, though. It’s taken me time. Don’t rush and don’t get frustrated. Everything feeds it, but you do have to put in the work and your first attempt may NOT be the thing you send to Sundance or put up on your YouTube channel. Your first attempt may be just that: a training ground.
