#question for @ladymcbethy: what advise do you have for other women in the industry? #answer: My advice to other women in “the industry” would be to get out. Once you’re ready – when you’ve received the education you need – met your kindred people – gained enough confidence from pitches & promotions & pats-on-the-back… leave safety & convention behind. Remember, just being “in” the industry was never the goal. Making content that matters is all that matters. So, use the industry to sharpen your tools and look for the ripe moment to cut out the Tools. Since old Hollywood hinged so heavily on the subjugation of women, doesn’t it make sense that we would lead the charge for reinvention? Don’t “pay your dues” to a broken system. Sometimes it’s just best to go over-the-top. #question for @ladymcbethy: What is your biggest concern with the future? #answer: I could be concerned about my massive student debt, my terrible credit, my chronic pain and wheezy breathing… while listening to my anxious heartbeats skipping by, each uninsured… wondering how long I can get by without seeing a dentist before my teeth fall out or stain over irreversibly from coffee and nicotine… But, I’m practicing to accept that my future won’t be easy or squeaky-clean. When I decided to put “art” above the comfort of my lifestyle or legitimacy of my resume, I gave up the right to bemoan the loss of appeasing things. So my only real fear, anymore, is that I’ll die or go crazy before I can commit my story, somewhat comprehensively, to some decipherable artistic canon. The clock is ticking. #question for @ladymcbethy: What is a successful moment in your career so far? #answer: My “career” amounts to peanuts – projects made at Film School & temp hours filling in for assistants to people who are actually important in Hollywood… I did have one glory-soaked screening while in Grad School, though, where people complimented the short I’d worked so hard on – faculty & friends validating the leap I’d taken into artistic vulnerability! (the choir sings!) But things got harder after that. I ended up quitting school over irreconcilable indifferences & setting out into the frigid landscape of actually independent filmmaking… just Aaron & me… a&B. And it’s funny, it didn’t look like “success” the way other people describe it. But, I realized it’s what I wanted all along – to be off the legitimate grid calling our own creative shots! Just a&B and total artistic liberty to make the work I’ve really got inside me! (the choir weeps!) Anyway, that’s what we’re working on now… just the culmination of everything – the big dream! – the nEXt mov(i)e… Hopefully the real “success” that’s still to cum… But I know I only have the courage to reinvent the wheel in the wilderness because I can still sip on fat memories of old flattery. #question for @lyvimar: What do you collect, if anything? #answer: I collect a few things, mostly collecting objects that feature or represent things I like, like toys, stickers and clothing. My biggest collection is from the video game “The Last of Us”, where I have figures, signed books and prints, even hard to find promotional items. #question for @lyvimar: What advice do you have for other women in the industry? #answer: I would say never be afraid to share what is on your mind. I think there are many occasions where we want to be nice or we don’t want to get in someone’s face or have someone get upset with what we have to say but I think there are things that we still need to change in this industry for women and the only way we can do it is by being vocal ourselves and encouraging other people to be vocal and hold their own thoughts and opinions as important. ‘Cause I have definitely had a lot of uncomfortable moments where I have spoken to other artists, writers or directors and been like, “hey, you need more representation of women” or “I don’t think this should be the only thing” and it has been difficult when they have come back and are like, “it’s fine” or “it doesn’t matter”. They don’t see the issue like I see it. #question for @lyvimar: What is a successful moment in your career so far? #answer: Success is really hard to define. I think there have been a few times in my life where I felt like, this is it, this is my successful moment, everything is going to be downhill from here, everything is going to be amazing. And then it turned out that moment wasn’t as big as I thought it was or I didn’t take as full of an advantage of it that I should have. So I think a successful moment is difficult for me to think of ‘cause I could say it was when I won a student Emmy but then right after I don’t think I took advantage of the connections I’ve made or in reaching out to those people so it kind of just fell off. But I can still think of small successful things like that Emmy helped me get into grad school which then helped me get an internship at Dreamworks Animation which then helped me get my job.
