When the credits roll at the end of a movie, the sheer number of names makes it clear how many people it takes to bring a story to life. What often goes unnoticed is how deeply women have shaped every part of filmmaking, from acting, directing, and editing to composing, producing, and even running studios. While their presence has sometimes been sidelined or erased from the record, women have been essential to cinema since its earliest flickers on the screen.

Women throughout the last century have played essential roles on television, from promoting open discussions on gender, sexuality, and race to playing critical parts in political debates. Today, women make up 52% of the US population. However, they are only on our screens 38% of the time. While that is a huge leap from where the entertainment industry was a century ago, there is still a need to strive for equal representation of the roles that actresses play on our screens. The guide provides a history of women’s representation (and under-representation) on television.
