Help each other. There’s enough room for all of us. Lena Dunham, Amy Schumer, Melissa McCarthy are just some of my favorites that have completely changed the game for us. @gracieraena: What is a successful moment in your career so far? I went to Oxford. I was going to be a lawyer. Everyone saw this as the “most successful” thing I’d ever done. I was later hooked up with lawyers in London, I was offered a job. Everything was set. I secretly applied to New York Stage & Film apprentice program because I wanted to be an actress. I had never told anyone. There weren’t really opportunities in high school or college. There was a one in a million chance I’d get in, with no experience, but based off my audition and essays they actually offered me a scholarship. So I went to New York! It wasn’t some huge break through into the industry, but it was one of the first moments I stood in my truth. This post contains a spoiler for “Joy” @gracieraena: What’s a defining moment in your life? Last year my grandfather and my father died within a six-month period. And I broke up from a serious relationship. My whole life flipped upside down and it happened so quickly. That was pretty defining because I felt completely stripped down. I had nothing left. And I think that’s a big part of why, now, I’m so aware that someone else might be going through a really hard time today or they might need a boost. And I make an effort to every day reach out to people and make sure they are doing okay. It humbled me. It was the greatest experience of my life, but that was definitely a defining moment because I was suppose to be a Hollywood star- to be pursuing my career, building my resume, etc. But that’s not what life had in mind. It was hard, especially with my grandpa. I was with him throughout hospice and his cancer treatments and he was the closest person in the world to me. It wasn’t until Christmas, a year and a half later, I saw “Joy” with my mom and (spoiler alert) the part where the grandmother passes away, that I burst into tears. I was with him the moment he passed, but not until a year later was I finally able to feel it. @gracieraena: Why did you decide to get into this industry? Good question. It wasn’t so much a decision as a need. Since I was a kid, I always wanted to be an actress. It’s so funny; this has been coming up so much lately! When I was four-years-old, I was very quiet and reserved. For Halloween, I dressed up as Dorothy and my grandmother took me to a costume contest. My mom sewed my outfit because it couldn’t be a costume; it needed to be real because I was Dorothy. When I’d watch the movie, I’d think, “I am Dorothy… this is who I am. This is my story”. So I went to the contest and there were all these other little Dorothys wearing costumes and I was SHOCKED. In my PTSD haze, I went around trying to reason with them, “I don’t think you understand, someone’s lied to you! I’m Dorothy…”

And truth be told, that’s how I feel when I audition. I heard Jennifer Lawrence talking about this the other day; it feels like you’re coming out of the closet…. to announce to the world, “This is who I am. I can’t remove this. This is how I feel.”
And it doesn’t really matter how successful I am. I have to do this for me; I have to live these characters, I have to act. I know that might sound selfish, but I really do. It doesn’t matter, the money.
