Pikachu… just.. anything to do with that little electric rat makes my heart so HAPPY! I’ve got a collection going of every single Pikachu Pokémon card I can get my hands on, as well as dedicating a small part of my desk at work to all the cute figures I’ve got. I’m really easy to buy gifts for, haha. Pokémon was and really still is one of my number one sources of inspiration for animation, the fight sequences, the creativity in movement, the hand drawn FX… it’s just so freakin’ COOL!! I’ve got a little passion project in the works where I’m re-animating the opening for, “Avatar the Last Airbender” using Pokémon to match the elements. I’m 28 years old and my passion for pocket monsters isn’t going anywhere!!

I collect nerdy earrings and scarves with geeky prints like star wars and marvel! Love wearing little pieces of my favourite fandoms where ever I go.

I collect snow globes from every foreign city I visit! Only two have broken so far- one from Edinburgh from the UK and one from Stuttgart from Germany, so I guess I’ll have to go back to replace them. My favourites are one from Copenhagen with the statue of “The Little Mermaid” inside, and one from Austin, Texas which is actually a sand globe with a snake in it since they don’t get snow. I also collect graphic novels and comics, and am in desperate need of some more bookshelves…

Share your knowledge. Don’t compete with your peers, uplift them.

Always pipe up and ask for what you want. It can feel so hard to do, but most of the big steps forward in my career came directly from me letting people know what my goals were and asking for help getting where I wanted to go. And you don’t have to feel like you’re in this alone. I’ve seen such a huge surge of women in animation – and I think we’re slowly but surely going to be seeing more women moving up into higher positions by sheer force of numbers.

Ask for what you want. If you think you’re ready for that promotion start telling people that’s a position you want to step in to. Wanting a raise at work? Make a list of the things you feel you’ve gone above and beyond in and negotiate that raise. I’m currently working on a show with an all female animation supervisor team, sitting side by side in an office full of amazingly organized, talented and passionate women who are all here because they weren’t afraid of stepping up and saying they were the right person for the job. I feel like a lot of young women are taught to be overly cautious and hesitant about speaking up lest it seem like they’re bragging or overstepping in some way, but I’d really like to encourage my fellow female artists to speak up and believe in themselves.

Keep doing what you love. It takes a lot of hard work and perseverance, but eventually you will see yourself start achieving the things you set out to do and it will be incredibly rewarding.

Do a good job! Do the best you can, ask for help when you need it, and tell people what you want to do and where you want to go. I want to direct animation, period. I was born for this, I went to school for this, I work in the animation industry and I tell my colleagues that I want to direct. There is zero doubt in my mind that voicing my intentions and ambitions helped me land the director position on the Five in Focus short film. If people know what you want to do, they’ll be more inclined to let you know about opportunities and/or recommend you for positions. Don’t be too humble about it- voice your wants and opinions. On the flip side, listen to your friends and colleagues. If you know someone looking for a job and you’re in a position to help them land it, support each other! Help each other! If you’re not sure what you want to do, there’s no harm in testing the waters in different areas if that will help and if you have a supportive workplace- you just need to make that clear to people who can help you get to where you want to go along with working on your own to get there.

Having a great boss that took a chance on me and let me become a designer on his team. I was a modeler and surfacer for years before being able to break into design.

Being selected for Five in Focus was huge. It was my first semi-professional foray into writing, and really helped me shift the way I was thinking and be more active in pursuing professional writing work.
