@sarahnhobbes: What is a successful moment in your career so far? I wrote, acted and produced a short called “I Love” and it got into two festivals: The Beverly Hills Short Fest and then some other festival. It was the first festival to have it screened with my friends and to answer questions and to be in this line of people talking about how they used fancy equipment that got stolen and how they were still able to produce these things and spend thousands and they asked me how much we spent and we spent $100. And it looked just as good, if not better, than some. There was this feeling of “I can make anything” and that was a really good feeling. And then, the other festival I won “Best Actress” and it was so weird because I wondered, “you liked my acting but not my writing” and I got to give a speech and it was fun. It’s online somewhere and really embarrassing ‘cause I want to thank my parents but they aren’t there. @sarahnhobbes: What’s a defining moment in your life? I want to find a good one! My grandparents passed away when I was 7-years-old in a crazy drunk-driving car accident. It made me who I am. Sadness creates things and that is how I got into theater. My mom took me to an audition for “The Music Man” that summer because she knew I needed to have some fun. So, there I was, a 7-year-old with kids all the way up to 18 singing “The Wells Fargo Wagon” and I loved my life even though we had just dealt with such a difficult time. I remember crying cause some kid hit me in the show and they asked me, “can you go on stage and not cry?” These 18-year-olds were talking to me and I was like, “I can do it.” It was this moment of “I’m fine” and I went on and I did the whole song, smiled and came back and started crying all over again. I still remember that moment. @sarahandhobbes: Why did you decide to work in this industry? It’s a funny thing. I did study acting. I wanted to go into acting. But I wanted to go into theater. It was while at Chapman, one of my friends saw me in a play and said “I want to cast you in my thesis.” I was like, “oh, okay. I’ve never done that before but I’ll try.” I didn’t like film or TV because you don’t have an audience and I love the audience and you don’t have an audience. I was doing a scene in that thesis and I finished. I looked back at the crew and they were all laughing. I realized, “they’re my audience!” I was sold. It was so much fun. I wanted to keep doing it. I found this industry reaches more people. When you are in a play it’s harder to reach everybody but also a harder field to get into, I think. You can make anything: youtube, Netflix, wherever you are. @makingchaos_sekiya: What do you collect, if anything? I collect books written by women and art books. I have a kindle but there are certain books I want to touch. The producer of my film @therevivalmovie, Yaani Supreme (@yaanisupreme)is launching a pop-up called CHLOE in DC soon. It’s a multi-use space dedicated to putting books into the hands of the people. I am excited because I want to keep buying lots of books from women writers. @makingchaos_sekiya: What advise do you have for other women in the industry? Be bold, confident and keep connecting with people. At times as women, we don’t give ourselves enough pats on the back. Our male counterparts sometimes are half as good and they approach everything as if they are geniuses all the time because they know, “they’ll get it”. We have to #KanyeWest this business sometimes. Not become an ego maniac but stand in your light and let everyone know what you’re doing. We need more collaboration and that’s where the connections come in. I look at Array Now and Film Fatales. Everything is better with collaboration and connections. Make meaningful connections with people that you really appreciate and connect with. People talk about networking but it’s “connections” that count. Networking is just a handshake. @makingchaos_sekiya: What is a successful moment in your career so far? I think getting on the cover of GoMagazine (@gomagazineny) and being named one of the 100 women we love. I have picked up that magazine since I arrived in New York years ago and now I’m in it. I was really grateful. One step at a time. Making my first documentary feature, @therevivalmovie really pushed me forward. It was a big risk to launch a kickstarter for a documentary on queer women of color poets but it worked. @makingchaos_sekiya: What is your biggest concern with the future? As a filmmaker making non fiction films that turn the lens on communities that are often marginalized, my biggest concern is that we keep telling important and real stories. With everyone wanting a minute laugh here or there, are we going to loose that long format storytelling. But on the flip side, what I’m really excited about are the digital platforms like Netflix, Amazon and Hulu that are taking big risks and creating more platforms for storytelling. Netflix documentaries are my life blood. @makingchaos_sekiya: What’s a defining moment in your life? There are so many moments. I am an immigrant. I was born in the Bahamas and only moved here for college. When I was growing up I watched one television station and one movie theater. It was called ZNS until we finally got a cable infrastructure so films were my life. The first movie I remember seeing in a theater was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I am sure we went because of my brother. So, coming to United Stated was probably the most defining moment because I walked into so many opportunities..endless. @makingchaos_sekiya: Why did you decide to work in this industry? As a creative individual, I wanted to be in an industry that allowed me to use all my talents. When I left film school, it was tough to break into film but I ended up in television which allowed me to use my skills production and then finally of storytelling and editing crafting marketing campaigns. I paid a lot of dues. I started off as a Graphics Coordinator at SYFY and it wasn’t until almost 6 years later, after working late nights to prove myself that I was finally promoted. I worked to convince people that I had the talent it took to put my work on TV and it worked.
