@julie_paholio: What’s a defining moment in your life? My life is not really defined by one particular moment but rather a collection of moments. I would say it’s every time I’ve overcome a hardship. It’s every time I’ve sweat blood and tears to get the job done. It’s every time I had to fight my fears. Similarly, it’s every time I’ve experienced an abundance of joy, love, or sense of accomplishment (like shooting my first film or getting my Masters!). @julie_paholio: Why did you decide to get into this industry? It is both thrilling and terrifying. Every time I have the opportunity to be the Creative behind the camera, I am reminded of why I chose to do this— as a Cinematographer I bring to life what is in my head and for me there is nothing more magical than that. I remember someone sharing a quote with me once that “photography/cinematography is an art of observation. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” I can’t agree more. We all interpret what we see differently and as a female minority starting out in the industry, I believe that my particular experiences and cultural influences can sometimes offer a different interpretation and sensibility. I love having the opportunity to share that with others and to learn and collaborate together on new ideas in developing projects. I fall in love with visual story telling over and over again with every new project. It’s that same feeling that makes me feel like I’m in line with my purpose. I’m a perfectionist, which is one of the reasons I like film, because you have the time and resources to really curate and be specific. Realizing I didn’t always need to be right, however, allowed me the freedom to fail.
