@indigovalleyfilm: What’s a defining moment in your life? I was very sick several years ago, I have a rare blood disease which caused me to suffer from bilateral pulmonary embolisms (blood clots) in my lungs. I almost died. It was really scary. But what that experience really taught me was that you only have one life. You have to go for your dreams. I remember I didn’t want to sleep the first night I was in the ICU, because I was scared I would not wake up. People were dying all around me. I was twenty four years old. I kept the television on and Contact with Jodie Foster came on. I hadn’t seen that movie in years. But seeing that film and realizing that there is some kind of life beyond what we know, which at the time I was bracing myself for, really awakened the power of the visual language of film within me. I remember also hoping to survive so I could see the new Woody Allen movie Blue Jasmine because it was just about to come out, and she is my favorite actress of all time. So I spent the next year recovering, and over that year I met some great friends and collaborators, which led me to make Olivia Martha Ilse.
