@indigovalleyfilm: What advice do you have for other women in the industry? Connect with other women. Even people who you don’t think would talk to you (such as more well known filmmakers, actors, etc.) – approach them, ask them for advice. I launched Constellation Magazine (www.constellationmag.space) as a co-editor this past March, where I was in charge of the female filmmaking portfolio. Almost every single person I reached out to, many of whom I long admired and I thought would not do the interview, said yes. It was so inspiring.
.
Unrelated to Constellation, but still relevant to this point, I had a five minute conversation with Cate Blanchett at a Sydney Theatre Company reception (when she was artistic director of the company) in Australia. She talked to me about her film career. I remember she told me she was about to work with Terrance Malick but also she mainly spoke about her children, which made me realize she was just a normal person, undoubtedly with a huge amount of talent and grace.
.
Secondly, ignore the drama and the negativity. This is certainly very hard to do. I have been bullied in high school and even in my adult career. But I’ve realized, its okay to be different. Try to manage your stress level and have some kind of life outside of your work. I am still working on the latter.
