@gayedeebell: What advice do you have for other women in the industry? Two things come to mind for me at the moment. The first is… If you believe it, then you can do it. When I came out of grad school, I was ready to take on the world and my confidence was at an all-time high. But through the years and life and its changes and ups and downs, little by little, my belief in myself and what I could do increasingly eroded. Then, about 3 years ago. I started at a boot camp to get into better shape. I had never felt particularly athletic, never played sports as a kid and, other than dancing, had never found any kind of regular exercise I enjoyed enough to stick with. But, it turns out, I was really good at the HIIT training we did at boot camp AND I really liked it. I got stronger every day, I completely changed my eating habits, I lost a bunch of weight and, eventually, reached a level of fitness I didn’t even know I was capable of. Looking good and feeling good was great for my confidence, but I also learned something super valuable. I learned that if I SET my mind to do something, even something extremely challenging, I can do it. I guess, really, I had to re-learn that. So now I apply that mindset to all aspects of my life. If there is something I want to do, I know now that I can do it. And that has given me enormous power and confidence. The second piece of advice is a little simpler… Everyone’s heard the old saying “it’s who you know”, but, more importantly, I’ve also heard “it’s who you happen to know”. So be kind to everyone because you never can tell – your barista could turn out to be your director one day. And it never hurts to spread love, joy and kindness, no matter what industry you’re in. The world can always use more.
