1) Why did you decide to get into this industry?
I believe stories have the power to transform the way we think about the world and to spark our imagination. There is too much negative news in the world so I started making short documentaries as a way to capture stories of those who were coming up with solutions and innovations to face some of the world’s biggest problems. It is my hope that these stories not only inspire others but also empowers them to be part of creating positive change in their own communities.
2) What’s a defining moment in your life?
Sharing my TEDxYYC talk about the Power of Positive News was a defining moment. I chose to share about my journey with mental health and how it has motivated me to share more stories of hope. The response to this talk has been amazing – it was nerve wracking to share so vulnerably at the time but I have seen such a huge ripple effect.
3) What is your biggest concern with the future?
My concern is that too often we let fear take over and create “us” versus “them.” Fear isolates us but I believe that curiosity and hope can bring us together. I really believe we need more people who are willing to build bridges between communities and to courageously embrace curiosity rather than fear.
4) What is a successful moment in your career so far?
To me success is creating opportunities to empower others to share their story. My first documentary project was working alongside Director, Chris Hsiung empowering 60 junior high students to share stories from their community about unsung heroes who were making a difference. Seeing those 18 short films showcased was inspiring.
5) What advice do you have for other women in the industry?
Just go and shoot. Start filming something, anything, film your dog, your family members anything that makes you curious and start learning. Ask for help and give back to the film community because we all need each other to succeed.
6) What, if anything, do you collect?
Passport Stamps. I love travelling, especially to unusual places.
7) What are you working on next? In addition, if people want to find out more about you, where can they find you on social media?
