My mom died when I was 11 and then my dad died when I was 15 and it was after both of their deaths I became the person I should have always been. My mother was a Jamacian immigrant and my dad was a former NFL player turned motivational speaker who grew up very poor. They had a very different vision for myself than what I wanted, one that did not involve cameras, or famous people, or me ever being near Hollywood. They never accepted me as an artist. In fact, when I was published for the first time at 15, my dad told me I plagiarized the poem that I wrote. I was so crushed. So although it was incredibly painful to lose my parents at a young age, I was also able to really find my purpose by being free of their expectations.
